Rain, Kangaroos and a Change of Plans

Today is Friday, October 23rd, and it feels like it has been raining in southeastern Queensland for two weeks straight. Most days have brought on-and-off showers, but the past two days have been particularly wet, with heavy downpours for much of the day. Some areas have even experienced flooding.

I’ve managed to keep myself busy, working outside and feeding the animals whenever there’s a break in the rain. When the weather keeps me indoors, I find things to clean and do inside instead. There’s always something that needs doing, rain or shine!

Unfortunately, the weather has also meant that I haven’t had a single day off to get out and explore. With the forecast looking pretty miserable until Thursday, October 29th, I’ve decided to make the most of the first available opportunity and booked my tour of K’gari Island for Thursday and Friday.

I’ve also decided to cut my stay a few days short and visit the zoo on my way back to Brisbane before catching my flight to New Zealand.

It hasn’t been all work and rain, though. Ross and Ann took me to Maroom, a little coastal village where kangaroos seem to have decided that everyone’s yards are their personal hangout spots. They wander around as if they own the place, which, judging by how comfortable they look, they probably do! It was lovely to spend some time watching them and was a nice little outing, even if it wasn’t quite the sightseeing I’d had in mind.

We’ve also had a couple of extra guests for the remainder of my stay: a friend of Ross and Ann’s named Tora and her dog, Axle. Axle has taken quite a liking to me and follows me around wherever I go. He’s a sweetheart, and I’ve really enjoyed having a little buddy to keep me company.

Ross, unfortunately, has been laid up for the past few days with fluid on his knee. He was feeling a little better today, which is good to see. Everyone feels bad that I haven’t been able to get out and see more of the area, but what can you do? You can plan, book and look forward to things all you want, but you can’t control the weather.

So, I have two more weeks here, with a couple of days set aside for my K’gari Island tour. Then it’s off to the zoo, back to Brisbane and on to my next adventure in New Zealand.

This stay hasn’t turned out quite as I imagined, but that’s part of travelling, too. Not every experience goes according to plan, and sometimes you just have to roll with it, make the best of what you have and hope the sun eventually decides to make an appearance!

They will sad to see you go! I’m so happy you got to see kangaroos in the wild. You’re going to love the zoo and I’m excited to see pictures of you holding a koala!
